6 Tips for Finding Great Fashion at a Thrift Store

Featured / Shopping / Tips & Tricks

Thrift store shopping is a treasure hunt!

And it’s easy to make the hunt more fun and more fruitful. Follow these 6 easy steps to find great fashion at any thrift store:

6 Tips for Finding Great Thrift Store Fashion

  • 1. Look for colors you look best in.

Go down the racks looking for color first. Look for a color you love and want to find—don’t just default to black or white. And don’t pull an article of clothing off a thrift store rack until you discover a color that you are attracted to.

  • 2. Check out the design lines of the garment.

Once you find the right color garment, look at its design. Do you prefer animated designs, stylized designs, or more angles and points? Look at collars, pockets, hems, and necklines. If the design lines are not right for you, put it back.

  • 3. Fabrication is the next item to consider.

Do you like soft, flowing, comfy fabrics? Or do you prefer more structured, fitted garments? The sure way to know if the garment is right is to try it on! Does it feel good on your body? Only keep it if you can say YES!

  • 4. Look at the pattern (if it has one).

Does the garment have a pattern you’re attracted to? Is it busy enough or simple enough for your taste? Many women don’t even like pattern and prefer solid colors. If that’s you, embrace your preference! As long as the pattern feels right for you, move on to the next step.

  • 5. If the item has made it this far, look it over for quality.

Make sure the item is in good shape. Do you see any tears, rips, spots, or flaws? I actually find many items on thrift store racks with with price tags and brand tags still attached – bonus find!

  • 6. Your last step is a simple question to ask yourself: “Do I love it?”

I no longer settle for clothes I don’t love and feel good in, even if I can get them at thrift store prices. I have to be able to say “I love it!” in order to buy it. Don’t talk yourself into an article of clothing you can’t say you loveeven if you found it at the thrift store! If you don’t love it, you won’t wear it. And the garment will just hang in your closet, gathering dust.

Only buy items you love and your closet will only be filled with items you love.

  • Bonus: Make it even more fun by sharing!

You can make thrift store shopping even more fun by taking a sister or friend. Challenge each other to find the best treasure in the store for the best price. The winner takes the other to lunch!

Great fashion is waiting for you at a great price! These tips will help you find it more quickly and easily in any thrift store you visit.

I love thrift store treasure hunting. I frequently find next-to-new or brand new clothes, as well as high-end designer brands that sell for hundreds of dollars in retail stores. I’ve found some of my favorite items in thrift stores. You can, too!
